Lego has released a new line of Pokémon sets under the Smart Play banner, twelve kits that arrived on August 1 and range from small starter builds priced around fifteen dollars to more elaborate ones that reach one hundred twenty. The sets go beyond static construction by incorporating Smart Bricks that trigger sounds and simple interactions when slotted into the figures or placed near tagged objects.
Each Pokémon becomes responsive once the special brick is inserted. A Jolteon can exchange noises with a nearby Squirtle, settle into a snoring loop when laid on a bed, or produce chewing sounds beside a burger piece. Battles are activated by shaking two figures close together; a theme plays, players move the models to simulate hits, and prolonged shaking can overcharge an attack or leave a figure briefly dazed. Training tags and potion pieces allow pre-fight boosts or post-fight recovery, creating a lightweight version of role-playing mechanics inside physical bricks. Articulated examples include a Charizard with movable wings and a Mewtwo housed in a tank that opens with a wheel, while smaller sets feature a Pikachu-shaped house or a Squirtle mounted on a disc-shooting car. Even a blocky Bidoof makes an appearance.
The concept clearly draws on the long-standing habit of children inventing battles and care routines for their plastic monsters. Earlier generations supplied their own sound effects and storylines; these sets automate some of that play. That convenience comes with practical limits. Shaking two detailed models together risks scattering bricks or stressing articulated joints, especially on larger builds. Parents may find the more sedate sets—focused on feeding or bedtime—safer for younger users. The collect-them-all impulse remains strong, and the ability to mix Smart Bricks and tags across kits encourages additional purchases, a familiar dynamic in both Lego and Pokémon merchandising.
Lego and Pokémon have crossed paths before, yet the addition of electronic feedback marks a step further into interactive toys that already compete with screens and apps. At the higher end of the price range, assembling a varied roster becomes an expensive proposition for many families, even if individual entry points stay modest. The sets succeed at translating nostalgic fantasy into something that lights up and makes noise, but they also illustrate how modern toy design often layers technology onto activities that once required only imagination.
Whether the novelty of automated battles and feeding sounds sustains interest after the first wave of excitement will depend on durability and how freely children actually combine the pieces rather than simply completing each box as a standalone display.
