Kylian Mbappé named EA Sports FC 27 cover athlete

Kylian Mbappé is back on the front of a major football video game, this time as the cover athlete for EA Sports FC 27 Ultimate Edition. The French forward’s selection marks his first appearance on an EA Sports FC cover and his return to the franchise’s flagship packaging after a four-year absence. He will also appear on the EA Sports FC Mobile version, extending the partnership that has linked him to the series for years.

The announcement arrives at a moment when Mbappé’s club is difficult to ignore. Since joining Real Madrid in 2024 he has led La Liga scoring in both of his completed seasons and claimed the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League Golden Boot with 15 goals. Those club numbers were matched by strong showings for France over the summer, reinforcing the sense that he remains one of the few players capable of carrying both club and country campaigns at the same time. In an era when cover stars are chosen as much for market reach as for on-pitch dominance, the decision feels pragmatic rather than purely sentimental.

Football games have long used star power to signal a new cycle. Earlier editions leaned on icons who defined their generations; placing Mbappé front and centre now continues that pattern while acknowledging how the commercial landscape has shifted. The series itself has moved on from its previous branding, and pairing it with a player still in his peak years offers a straightforward way to keep the product visible in a crowded entertainment market. Whether the cover translates into meaningful gameplay improvements remains a separate question that trailers and early access will have to answer.

Mbappé himself described the moment as special and spoke of continuing a long-term relationship with the franchise. EA’s franchise leadership echoed the sentiment, pointing to his ambition and global appeal. Those statements are standard for such reveals, yet they sit against a backdrop of lingering debate about how faithfully the games capture the speed, decision-making and physicality of elite football. Cover athletes generate headlines; the software still has to deliver the experience that keeps players returning after the initial launch window.

The reveal opens a short run of pre-launch activity. A gameplay trailer is scheduled for Thursday, 23 July at 7 p.m. KSA time, giving the first extended look at whatever mechanical tweaks and presentation changes the new edition carries. For a series that has faced criticism over incremental updates in recent years, the trailer will be scrutinised as closely as the cover itself. Mbappé’s face on the box may draw casual attention, but sustained interest will depend on whether the pitch feels different enough to justify another annual purchase.

In the end the choice of cover star is a marketing calculation dressed as celebration. Mbappé’s current form makes him an obvious candidate, and the timing aligns with a period of high visibility for both player and product. Fans will judge the package on its own terms once the game lands, cover portrait and all.
