Tesla is expanding the role of artificial intelligence inside its cars in the UAE, rolling out Grok as part of software update 2026.32.6 across eligible vehicles. The update is being distributed over the air at no additional software cost, although using Grok requires either Tesla Premium Connectivity or a stable Wi-Fi connection.
Rather than functioning purely as a conversational chatbot sitting on the dashboard, Grok can interact with several everyday vehicle functions. Drivers can ask it to set destinations, modify navigation routes, find nearby points of interest, make phone calls, search for music and podcasts, or adjust climate settings without navigating touchscreen menus.
One of the more practically useful integrations is access to information from the vehicle owner’s manual. Tesla says Grok can answer questions about operating the car, maintenance and dashboard warnings, potentially making obscure manual pages easier to find when drivers need them.
The UAE rollout covers eligible Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y and Cybertruck vehicles. Grok can be accessed through the steering wheel controls or touchscreen.
Tesla is also leaning heavily into the more conversational side of generative AI. Users can choose modes including Assistant, Language Tutor, Storyteller, Meditation and Doc, alongside more unusual options such as Therapist and Conspiracy. Dedicated Kids Story Time and Kids Trivia Game modes are available, while several different voice personas can also be selected.
The result is another step away from the relatively rigid voice-command systems traditionally fitted to cars. Generative AI gives manufacturers an opportunity to make vehicle controls more conversational, but usefulness will ultimately depend on reliability. A chatbot getting an obscure trivia question wrong is irritating; misunderstanding a request involving a vehicle function carries rather different expectations.
Privacy will inevitably be another consideration as AI assistants become more deeply embedded in cars. Tesla says Grok conversations are anonymous to Tesla and are not associated with the vehicle.
The company plans to deepen Grok’s vehicle integration through future over-the-air updates, although it has not detailed exactly which additional controls will become accessible.
For UAE customers, the rollout means AI is moving beyond infotainment novelty and closer to becoming another interface for operating the car. The bigger test will be whether drivers find talking naturally to Grok genuinely faster and more dependable than simply tapping the touchscreen.
