Forget PHEVs: XPENG thinks range extenders are the Gulf’s real answer

XPENG has brought its Kunpeng range-extender technology to the Gulf, using the GX flagship SUV to make the case that an EV with a petrol generator on board suits this region better than either a pure battery car or a conventional plug-in hybrid. The pitch was made at a media workshop in Dubai, which also kicked off a GCC road tour designed to test the car in the conditions where this argument either holds up or falls apart.

How the system works matters here. In a range-extended EV, the wheels are always driven by electric motors. The 1.5-litre turbocharged engine acts only as a generator, feeding the battery and motors rather than driving the car directly. That’s different from most PHEVs, where the engine and motors share the work. Li Auto built a big business in China around this approach, and XPENG is now trying to bring it to markets where long distances between cities and patchy charging outside major centres make range anxiety a real concern.

On paper, the GX numbers are strong. It pairs a 63.3kWh battery with a 60-litre fuel tank, for a claimed 430km of electric range and 1,585km combined. Those figures are based on China’s CLTC test cycle, though, which is known to be the most generous of the major standards. Real-world range will be lower, especially when the air conditioning is working hard in 45-degree heat. More striking is the 800V architecture with 5C charging, which XPENG says takes the battery to 70 percent in 12 minutes. Fast charging like that is unusual for a vehicle that also carries a fuel tank.

Among XPENG’s other claims: the generator produces more than 3.6kWh per litre of fuel, the engine adds no more than 0.5dB of cabin noise when it kicks in, and the car can hold 150km/h cruising regardless of battery level, an important point since range extenders have traditionally lost power when the battery runs low. The drive unit makes 210kW and 465Nm. The GX is a six-seater with a power-folding third row, all-wheel steering and a 5.4m turning circle.

XPENG says it already has more than 3,000 orders in the Middle East, though it hasn’t published UAE pricing alongside that figure.

The Grand Xplore tour heads next to Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait. It includes heat testing in Kuwait, dune driving at Tal Moreeb in Liwa, a drive from Dubai to Salalah of around 1,200km without refuelling or recharging, and a vehicle-to-load desert camp setup. There’s also a promotional short featuring a lion and a Falcon Collector Edition, which say more about marketing than engineering. The Salalah drive is the one worth watching. If the GX can do it in heat without stopping, that says more about the range-extender case for the Gulf than any CLTC number.
