Netflix has officially renewed Dept. Q for a second season, confirming the return of Matthew Goode and the rest of the ensemble cast. The announcement comes nearly three months after the crime drama’s debut, which proved to be one of Netflix UK’s strongest performers of 2025 so far.
Season 1 premiered in May and quickly built momentum, spending six weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 and amassing more than 27 million views. It remained a consistent draw in the UK, where it held a spot in the top 10 for 63 days, and carried solid reviews with an 88% critics’ score and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Dept. Q Season 1 Review
Season 2 will again be set and filmed in Edinburgh, following the success of the city as a backdrop in the first installment. Goode will reprise his role as the weary yet sharp DCI Carl Morck, with Alexej Manvelov, Leah Byrne, and Jamie Sives returning as Akram, Rose, and Hardy. While the first season closed its central investigation, it left lingering questions about who shot Morck in the Leith Park incident—threads that will carry into the new episodes.
The creative team behind Dept. Q is also returning. Writer-director Scott Frank will continue to helm the adaptation, produced by Left Bank Pictures, with Netflix UK executives Mona Qureshi and Manda Levin overseeing the project. In a statement, Frank expressed his gratitude to the cast and crew and hinted at more of the dark, character-driven storytelling that helped the series resonate with audiences.
The renewal underscores Netflix’s strategy of investing in UK productions with global appeal. After the strong response to season 1, Dept. Q joins a growing list of crime dramas on the platform that balance local authenticity with international reach.
No production start date has been announced, but with the cast and creative team already confirmed, season 2 appears to be moving forward without major delays. For fans, that means it may not be long before Carl Morck and his team return to untangle more cold cases from the basement of Edinburgh police headquarters.
