Severance leads 2025 Emmy nominations as Apple TV+ gains ground in prestige TV

The 2025 Emmy nominations have been announced, and Severance has emerged as the most recognized series of the year, earning 27 nominations. Season 2 of the Apple TV+ psychological drama is now positioned as the leading contender for Outstanding Drama Series. The show’s second season also saw its core cast receive wide recognition, with six acting nominations, including nods for Adam Scott and Britt Lower in the lead drama categories.

Scott, however, may face stiff competition from Noah Wyle, whose return to Emmy recognition comes through his role as Dr. Michael Robinavitch in The Pitt. It’s Wyle’s first nomination in over two decades and has fueled speculation that the Television Academy may see this as a career milestone worth honoring. Whether that sentiment can overcome the momentum behind Severance remains to be seen.

Apple TV+ had a notably strong presence across the board. In the comedy categories, The Studio landed 23 nominations, making it the most-nominated comedy of the year. The behind-the-scenes satire received nods for Outstanding Comedy Series, along with lead and supporting nominations for Seth Rogen, Ike Barinholtz, Kathryn Hahn, and Catherine O’Hara. It signals continued investment by Apple in prestige content, particularly in genres it had once struggled to break into.

HBO, under various brand names, maintained its awards presence with several shows posting double-digit nominations. The Penguin (24), The White Lotus (23), The Last of Us (16), Hacks (14), and The Pitt (13) kept the network in familiar territory as a frontrunner in both drama and limited series categories.

Other notable nominees in drama include The Diplomat, Andor, Paradise, Slow Horses, and The White Lotus, alongside Severance and The Pitt. On the comedy side, Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Shrinking, Only Murders in the Building, and Hacks return to the field with strong support, joined by new entrants like Nobody Wants This and What We Do in the Shadows.

Limited series categories were led by The Penguin, Adolescence, Dying for Sex, and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, while Black Mirror also earned a nod for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.

Notable lead acting nominations include Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), Keri Russell (The Diplomat), Gary Oldman (Slow Horses), and Sterling K. Brown (Paradise). In comedy, Quinta Brunson, Kristen Bell, Ayo Edebiri, and Jeremy Allen White return in categories they’ve dominated in recent years.

As streaming platforms and traditional networks continue to vie for critical acclaim, the 2025 nominations reflect both stability and change. Prestige dramas remain a stronghold, but the surge in recognition for shows like The Studio and Nobody Wants This suggests that Emmy voters are responding to fresh formats and narratives across genres.

The 2025 Emmy Awards will take place on September 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze.
