Netflix sets course for new Dan Brown series with The Secret of Secrets

Netflix is moving forward with a new installment in the Robert Langdon saga, signaling the return of one of modern fiction’s most recognizable literary figures. The streaming platform has secured the rights to adapt The Secret of Secrets, Dan Brown’s forthcoming novel and the latest entry in the long-running series centered on symbologist Robert Langdon. Following a competitive bidding process, Netflix brought on Carlton Cuse as showrunner for the upcoming series, which remains untitled as it heads into pre-production.

The Secret of Secrets will mark the sixth novel in Brown’s Langdon series and the first since 2017’s Origin. With a release date set for September 9, the book continues Brown’s familiar formula: cryptic puzzles, historical intrigue, and high-stakes chases through iconic locations. While details about the series’ cast remain under wraps, speculation continues around whether Tom Hanks might reprise his role as Langdon—a part he played in three film adaptations starting with 2006’s The Da Vinci Code. However, given the project’s shift to television and Netflix’s broader interest in fresh casting strategies, a new actor may take the helm.

This will not be the first attempt to bring Langdon to the small screen. Peacock previously launched The Lost Symbol, starring Ashley Zukerman, but the show failed to resonate with viewers and was canceled after one season. With Netflix now in charge and audience interest in mystery thrillers still strong, the streaming giant will be looking to deliver a more enduring entry into the Dan Brown adaptation canon.

The decision to adapt The Secret of Secrets continues Netflix’s investment in book-based series, following successes with Bridgerton and Heartstopper. Unlike those romantic and youth-driven dramas, the Robert Langdon Netflix series will aim to attract a global audience drawn to cerebral thrillers, historical riddles, and globe-trotting suspense. With Carlton Cuse’s background in serialized storytelling—including credits on Lost and Jack Ryan—the creative direction may steer Langdon’s adventures into more grounded, character-driven territory.

While expectations are high, the platform’s track record with literary adaptations suggests cautious optimism. Netflix will need to strike a careful balance between staying true to the source material and evolving the tone and pacing for a streaming audience accustomed to binge-worthy formats. Whether The Secret of Secrets becomes a new favorite or joins the ranks of past attempts remains to be seen, but Langdon’s reappearance is sure to draw both longtime fans and new viewers curious about the next chapter in the Dan Brown universe.
