Hollywood loves a good franchise, and with ‘Lord of the Rings’, they’ve got a goldmine. So yeah, it’s not shocking that Warner Bros. is diving back into Middle-earth with two new films announced.
The first one’s called ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’, and guess what? Andy Serkis, the legend who brought Gollum to life, is directing! He’s also starring again, which honestly, who else could pull it off? This team also wrote the original trilogy, so at least there’s some continuity there.
Unsurprisingly, the movie will focus on everyone hunting down Gollum between ‘The Hobbit’ and the main ‘Lord of the Rings’ story. We all know how that goes, but with Serkis at the helm, it could be a cool character study.
Honestly, it was bound to happen sooner or later. After the original trilogy, we got the less-than-stellar ‘Hobbit’ movies, then Amazon’s ‘Rings of Power’ series. And don’t forget that anime-style ‘War of the Rohirrim’ movie coming this December!
As a massive fan, I’m cautiously optimistic. They can’t leave this franchise alone, so at least Serkis seems like the right person to handle this. Let’s hope they’ve learned from the ‘Hobbit’ debacle and focus on a tight, contained story. If they can pull that off, this could be a win for Middle-earth.
