Get ready for a new take on a classic action thriller. A “Cliffhanger” reboot is in the works, but this time, it’s Lily James, not Sylvester Stallone, who will be facing the heights.
The reimagining of the 1993 hit film will see James and Pierce Brosnan leading the cast, with Jaume Collet-Serra (known for his work on the “Carry-On” films) directing.
A New Direction:
This reboot takes a different approach from the original. While Stallone was set to reprise his role in a sequel with director Ric Roman Waugh, those plans have been scrapped in favor of a fresh start. Ana Lily Amirpour, acclaimed for films like “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night” and “Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon,” has penned the new script.
A Father-Daughter Story:
The updated “Cliffhanger” will center on a father-daughter relationship. Brosnan will play Ray Cooper, an experienced mountaineer who runs a luxurious chalet in the Dolomites with his daughter, Sydney. Their lives take a dangerous turn when they become the target of kidnappers during a visit from a billionaire’s son. James will portray Naomi, Ray’s other daughter, who is still grappling with the trauma of a past climbing accident. As she witnesses the kidnapping and escapes, she must confront her fears and fight to save her family.
Filming is Underway:
Production for the “Cliffhanger” reboot has commenced in Austria, with a supporting cast that includes Nell Tiger Free, Franz Rogowski, and others.
A New Legacy:
The original “Cliffhanger,” directed by Renny Harlin and starring Sylvester Stallone, was a box office success, grossing over $255 million worldwide. This reboot aims to capture the thrills and suspense of the original while introducing a new storyline and characters for a new generation of audiences.
The film is being produced by Rocket Science in partnership with Thank You Pictures and Supernix, and is expected to be released in theaters.
