Disney’s first anime, Twisted-Wonderland, sets October 29 premiere

Disney is set to release its first full-length anime series, Twisted-Wonderland, on October 29 via Disney+. The project adapts the popular mobile game of the same name, reimagining classic Disney villains within a boarding school setting.

The series takes place at Night Raven College, an academy where gifted students train in the use of magic. The institution’s traditions are rooted in the legacies of “The Great Seven,” a pantheon of legendary figures inspired by well-known Disney antagonists: the Queen of Hearts, Scar, Ursula, Jafar, the Evil Queen, Hades, and Maleficent. Each has inspired its own dormitory, shaping the school’s culture and rivalries.

The story follows Yuken Enma, voiced in Japanese by Yohei Azakami, who is unexpectedly transported to this magical world. Navigating the challenges of the school and its strange customs, Yuken searches for a way home while uncovering the truths behind its history. Season 1 will carry the subtitle Episode of Heartslabyul, referencing the dormitory linked to the Queen of Hearts. The anime is planned as a three-season series, with the first consisting of eight episodes.

Twisted-Wonderland originated as a mobile game developed in collaboration with Black Butler creator Yana Toboso. First released in Japan in 2020, the game quickly attracted a large following, leading to a four-volume manga adaptation before this upcoming anime version. The production brings together a notable creative team: Takahiro Natori, known for work on Mobile Suit Gundam and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, serves as chief director and script supervisor, while Yoichi Kato (City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes, Yo-Kai Watch) handles series composition.

By blending elements from both the game and the manga, the adaptation aims to deliver a structured narrative over its planned three-season run. With its October debut, Twisted-Wonderland will mark a notable step in Disney’s expansion into serialized anime storytelling.
