Nearly two decades after his television debut, Dexter Morgan is back—this time in the heart of New York City. The first trailer for Dexter: Resurrection has been released, offering a preview of the series’ latest direction as it picks up from the events of Dexter: New Blood. Michael C. Hall returns as the troubled antihero, awakening in a hospital bed after being shot by his son, Harrison. The trailer sets a somber and introspective tone, with Dexter voicing a cryptic line: “You have to go through hell to achieve resurrection.”
Dexter: Resurrection resumes in the aftermath of betrayal and bloodshed. With Harrison missing, Dexter heads to New York on a search for his son and some form of redemption. However, his past is never far behind. Miami Metro’s Angel Batista, played once again by David Zayas, re-enters the story—visibly rattled and suspicious about Dexter’s reappearance, and still haunted by the Bay Harbor Butcher’s legacy.
The upcoming season introduces a fresh cast of characters who inhabit the city’s underbelly, including a circle of serial killers tied to Leon Prater, portrayed by Peter Dinklage. On the surface, Prater is a billionaire philanthropist, but beneath the charm lies a calculated predator. “You really like serial killers,” Dexter remarks to him in the trailer, to which Prater replies, “I pride myself on finding the best of the best in every field.” His presence signals a new adversary who rivals Dexter in intellect and menace.
Joining the ensemble are Uma Thurman, David Dastmalchian, Eric Stonestreet, Krysten Ritter, and Neil Patrick Harris, all appearing to be woven into Prater’s dark web. Returning cast members John Lithgow, Jimmy Smits, and David Magidoff further anchor the series in its past, hinting at unresolved conflicts and familiar horrors.
Set against the backdrop of a restless city, the season promises to explore the complicated dynamic between Dexter and Harrison, as both characters confront their inner turmoil and the cost of their choices. Showrunner Clyde Phillips and executive producers, including Hall himself, previewed the show at CCXP Mexico City, where fan anticipation ran high.
Dexter: Resurrection premieres July 11 with a two-episode release for Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers. The on-air debut follows on July 13, with new episodes rolling out weekly.
