Crime drama with a twist: Netflix’s ‘Crooks’ is familiar fun

Sure, another international crime drama on Netflix might not make your heart race. And yes, “Crooks” leans heavily into familiar genre tropes. The reluctant criminal pulled back in for “one last job”? The power-hungry villains? The hulking driver with a soft side? We’ve been there, done that.

But here’s the thing: when it comes to genre entertainment, execution matters. A good repackaging of old ideas can still be a blast, and that’s where “Crooks” succeeds. It delivers the escapist thrills of a classic heist story with enough humor, character, and a few unexpected twists to keep you hooked.

The Setup: A Double Heist and a Double Act

“Crooks” starts with a bang – a museum heist, two gangs vying for a rare coin worth millions, and our “heroes” caught in the crossfire. This setup, while straightforward, is where the show starts to shine by focusing on its central characters:

  • Charly: The retired safecracker, just wanting a normal life with his wife and son, reluctantly pulled back into the game by threats and promises.
  • Joseph: The massive, intimidating driver with a penchant for beating people up, yet also surprisingly gentle at his core.

These two form the heart of “Crooks”. Blackmailed into action, they become the unlikely heroes we find ourselves rooting for. Their odd-couple dynamic adds a fresh layer to the familiar story beats.

The Action: Predictable, but Enjoyable

The chase for the elusive coin takes us on a European tour of car chases, double-crosses, and close calls. “Crooks” doesn’t reinvent the heist genre, but it delivers the action set pieces with enough flair to keep things exciting. Expect thrilling getaways, narrow escapes, and enough suspenseful standoffs to satisfy genre fans.

Humor: An Unexpected Delight

What surprised me about “Crooks” was its humor. The show finds moments of levity amidst the tension, injecting a dose of fun into the otherwise familiar crime plot. This unexpected comedic touch prevents the show from taking itself too seriously, offering a refreshing shift in tone.

Is ‘Crooks’ Groundbreaking? No. Is it Entertaining? Absolutely.

“Crooks” isn’t here to make profound statements or offer complex moral quandaries. It knows its lane: escapist action with charmingly flawed leads. If you’re in the mood for a familiar thrill ride with a few delightful surprises, “Crooks” will likely hit the spot. This Spanish production proves there’s still life in the old heist story when it’s delivered with a wink, a few laughs, and a focus on the oddball characters at its center.

Recommendation: It’s worth a watch, especially if you’re longing for a classic crime caper done right, with a side of unexpected humor. While it might not leave a lasting mark, “Crooks” delivers a satisfying dose of familiar fun.
