Beyond summer blockbusters, here are some award contenders gracing the silver screen this fall

As the summer blockbuster season winds down, movie lovers are looking ahead to the fall with anticipation. The summer saw a resurgence in box office numbers thanks to popular sequels and franchise extensions, and the fall promises to deliver more of the same, as well as some intriguing original films.

horror highlights:

  • Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (Sept. 6): Michael Keaton, Tim Burton, and Winona Ryder return for the sequel to their cult classic comedy.
  • The Front Room (Sept. 6): The Eggers brothers, Sam and Max, make their directorial debut with this A24 horror film based on a short story by Susan Hill.
  • Speak No Evil (Sept. 13): James Watkins and Blumhouse Productions remake the acclaimed Danish psychological thriller.
  • Terrifier 3 (Oct. 11): Art the Clown returns for more blood and gore in this slasher sequel.
  • Smile 2 (Oct. 18): The sequel to the 2022 horror hit follows a pop star who becomes the target of a demonic entity.

  • Transformers One (Sept. 20): This animated prequel explores the origins of Optimus Prime and Megatron.
  • Venom: The Last Dance (Oct. 25): The third and final installment in the Venom trilogy finds Eddie Brock and his symbiote on the run.
  • Gladiator 2 (Nov. 22): Ridley Scott returns to the Roman Empire for this sequel to his 2000 Best Picture winner.
  • Moana 2 (Nov. 27): The Polynesian princess embarks on a new adventure in this sequel to the 2016 Disney animated hit.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Dec. 20): Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles face off against Shadow the Hedgehog in this video game adaptation.

  • The Substance (Sept. 20): Demi Moore stars in this body horror film about a woman who takes a miracle substance that grants her a new body.
  • Never Let Go (Sept. 20): Halle Berry stars in this horror film about a single mother who raises her children to fear the woods around them.
  • Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story (Sept. 20): This documentary chronicles the life and career of Christopher Reeve.
  • Megalopolis (Sept. 27): Francis Ford Coppola’s long-awaited epic about an architect who attempts to reinvent his medium and change the world.
  • The Wild Robot (Sept. 27): This animated film from Chris Sanders follows a robot who crash-lands on an island and comes to care for an orphaned baby goose.
  • Lee (Sept. 27): Kate Winslet stars in this biopic about the legendary war photographer Lee Miller.
  • Apartment 7A (Sept. 27): This prequel to Rosemary’s Baby follows the troubled pregnancy of Terry Gionoffrio.
  • Joker: Folie à Deux (Oct. 4): Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga star in this sequel to the 2019 Oscar-winning film.
  • Conclave (Nov. 8): This political thriller follows a conclave of cardinals as they select a new Pope.
  • Red One (Nov. 15): Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans star in this Christmas action-comedy about saving Santa Claus.
  • Mufasa: The Lion King (Dec. 20): This prequel to The Lion King tells the story of Mufasa’s childhood.
  • A Complete Unknown (Dec. 25): Timothée Chalamet stars in this biopic about Bob Dylan.
