Apple TV+ adapts Neuromancer: a cyberpunk hacker drama from William Gibson’s classic

Apple TV+ is adding another ambitious genre series to its growing lineup with the upcoming adaptation of Neuromancer, a 10-episode drama based on William Gibson’s seminal 1984 novel that defined much of the cyberpunk genre. The streaming platform has released its first teaser, offering a glimpse into the dark, high-tech world of hackers, espionage, and corporate corruption.

Neuromancer follows the story of Case, an elite hacker whose skills once made him invaluable in underground digital circles until betrayal left him damaged and unemployable. Living in the dystopian underworld, Case is pulled back into the world of hacking when he teams up with Molly, an assassin with mirrored lenses surgically implanted over her eyes. Together, they are tasked with a job that threatens to expose the secrets of a powerful corporate empire, setting the stage for a narrative that blends futuristic technology with raw human desperation.

The premise carries echoes of Mr. Robot, the cult-favourite series that redefined hacker dramas for a modern audience. Like Elliot Alderson, Gibson’s Case is portrayed as disillusioned and fractured, embodying the archetype of a gifted yet self-destructive hacker navigating systems beyond his control. This thematic alignment suggests Neuromancer may resonate with viewers who appreciated the psychological complexity and technological realism of Mr. Robot.

The Apple TV+ adaptation is helmed by an experienced creative team. Graham Roland, known for Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and Dark Winds, will serve as showrunner, while JD Dillard, who directed Devotion and Sleight, is attached as pilot director. The production is a collaboration between Skydance Television, the studio behind Apple TV+’s Foundation, along with Anonymous Content and DreamCrew Entertainment, the production company co-founded by Drake.

Neuromancer holds a significant place in science fiction history. As the first book in Gibson’s “Sprawl” trilogy, it introduced the concept of cyberspace and helped shape the narrative and aesthetic frameworks of cyberpunk as a genre. Its influence can be traced across media, from The Matrix to Black Mirror. Upon release, Neuromancer won the Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Awards, marking it as a rare triple-award-winning novel.

While an official premiere date has yet to be announced, the release of the teaser signals that Neuromancer may join Apple TV+’s upcoming slate soon. For fans of cyberpunk, hacker dramas, and speculative fiction that interrogates humanity’s relationship with technology, this adaptation is shaping up to be a series to watch closely in the coming months.
