The Boys season 5 trailer: Homelander’s final power play

The boys is heading toward its final chapter, and the first trailer for The Boys Season 5 suggests a series preparing for a violent and chaotic conclusion. The upcoming season, which premieres April 8, 2026 on Prime Video, positions the long-running conflict between Billy Butcher and Homelander as the central endgame. After years of escalating confrontations, betrayals, and shifting alliances, the story now appears to be narrowing toward a final showdown between the two figures who have defined the series since its beginning.

The Boys began as an adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic, a deliberately cynical take on corporate superheroes. Under showrunner Eric Kripke, the television version gradually expanded that idea into broader political satire, combining violent spectacle with commentary about power, media manipulation, and celebrity culture. The new trailer for The Boys Season 5 indicates that the final season will continue leaning into those themes while wrapping up several long-running storylines.

Much of the footage centers on Homelander’s latest attempt to consolidate power. Early moments in the trailer show him approaching the Oval Office while claiming that his authority is “absolute.” The implication is that his ambitions now extend beyond influence over Vought International or the Seven. The character appears to be pursuing a more permanent form of dominance by acquiring V-One, the original and most potent version of Compound V.

Viewers recently saw the substance referenced in the spinoff series Gen V. In that show, Thomas Godolkin attempted to use V-One as part of a failed power grab. The Boys Season 5 trailer suggests that if someone with Homelander’s abilities gained access to the formula, the consequences could be far more serious, potentially granting him a form of functional immortality.

Opposing him remains Billy Butcher, whose own transformation has been one of the series’ darker developments. Butcher has spent several seasons experimenting with Compound V in order to fight supes on equal footing. That decision appears to have accelerated a physical and psychological decline, including the emergence of a destructive alter ego known as Joe Kessler. The trailer shows Butcher using the tentacle-like powers associated with that persona, leaving open questions about how much control he still has. His ultimate plan still seems to involve releasing a virus capable of killing supes entirely, even if the strategy could also kill him.

Another notable development in The Boys Season 5 trailer is the return of Soldier Boy. The character, portrayed by Jensen Ackles, has been held in suspended containment since the events of Season Three, when Homelander discovered that Soldier Boy was his biological father. The trailer hints that Homelander may attempt to bring him back into the conflict, creating an uneasy alliance between two of the most unstable figures in the series.

The casting also includes a reunion of actors from Supernatural, another series created by Eric Kripke. Jared Padalecki appears briefly in the trailer, although his role has not yet been confirmed. The cameo suggests the show is continuing its habit of pulling familiar collaborators into the expanding cast.

Within the Seven, the trailer points to several shifting loyalties. A-Train appears to be distancing himself from Homelander’s increasingly authoritarian leadership, with scenes showing him moving alongside Hughie and Starlight. Whether that signals a genuine redemption arc or simply sets up another betrayal remains unclear. Sister Sage, one of the more recent additions to the group, also appears frequently in the footage, often observing events rather than directly participating, reinforcing the idea that she may be quietly influencing the situation behind the scenes.

The series also continues expanding its supporting characters. Daveed Diggs briefly appears as Oh-Father, a preacher-like supe associated with a religious hero movement. In the source comics, the character eventually aligns himself with Homelander’s ambitions, suggesting that religion and political influence could play a larger role in the final conflict.

Characters from the spinoff Gen V also appear poised to enter the main storyline. Starlight is shown recruiting Marie Moreau and Jordan Li, two students from Godolkin University whose powers and knowledge of Compound V’s origins could be useful in the coming confrontation. Their inclusion signals a continued effort to connect the broader franchise narrative.

Not all developments in the trailer are framed as dramatic. The Deep, long portrayed as one of the show’s most insecure characters, appears to have launched a podcast alongside Black Noir. The gag reflects the show’s ongoing interest in satirizing internet culture and influencer media, while also highlighting the character’s tendency to chase relevance in increasingly awkward ways.

With The Boys Season 5 positioned as the final installment, the series now faces the challenge of concluding a story that has grown larger and more chaotic over four seasons and multiple spinoffs. The trailer suggests that the ending will bring together political satire, personal vendettas, and the ongoing question of whether anyone in this world can actually stop Homelander.
