New Supergirl teaser shows how Superman fits into the story

A new look at David Corenswet’s return as Superman has been revealed ahead of the upcoming Supergirl film, offering an early indication of how the character will fit into the expanding DC Universe.

Following his introduction in the 2025 Superman film directed by James Gunn, Corenswet is set to reprise the role in Supergirl, scheduled for release on June 26, 2026. The latest teaser material shows Kal-El attempting to reach his cousin Kara Zor-El, suggesting a narrative connection between the two Kryptonian characters while also reinforcing that their paths may diverge during the story.

The footage points to a scenario where Superman remains on Earth dealing with ongoing responsibilities, while Supergirl operates largely off-world. This separation appears to shape the structure of the film, positioning Kara as the central figure rather than sharing focus with a more established character. While Superman’s presence is confirmed, current details suggest his role will be limited.

Comments from those involved in production indicate that Corenswet appears in more than a brief cameo but is not a primary driver of the plot. Actress Milly Alcock, who plays Supergirl, has described filming early scenes alongside Corenswet, including sequences performed in Kryptonian. These moments seem designed to establish character relationships and context rather than dominate the narrative.

This approach reflects a broader pattern in franchise storytelling, where familiar characters are used selectively to support newer leads without overshadowing them. In this case, Superman’s inclusion may help connect the film to the wider DC continuity while allowing Supergirl to stand on its own.

The project also marks the first time the character of Supergirl has led a theatrical release since 1984. That gap places additional attention on how the film balances legacy elements with a fresh direction. Including Superman in a supporting capacity may help bridge that gap, though it also raises expectations about how interconnected the broader storyline will become.

Narratively, the timing of the film—set after the events of the 2025 Superman installment—limits how involved Clark Kent can realistically be. With ongoing conflicts on Earth, including previous encounters with major adversaries, the story appears structured to keep him largely separate from Kara’s journey. This keeps the focus on her development while still acknowledging shared origins.

As DC Studios continues to shape its current slate, Supergirl appears positioned as both a standalone story and part of a larger interconnected plan. Superman’s role, while present, seems calibrated to support that balance rather than redefine it.
