Super Mario Galaxy movie trailer launches Mario into space adventure

The first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has arrived, setting the stage for Nintendo and Illumination’s next animated feature set to debut on April 3rd, 2026. Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this new installment expands the familiar Mushroom Kingdom into something much larger — and stranger — as Mario and company take to space.

The trailer opens with glimpses of familiar settings before quickly moving beyond them. Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) are thrust into a cosmic adventure after encountering Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie), who wields a magical paintbrush capable of turning objects into metallic versions of themselves. His goal: to free his father, Bowser (Jack Black), seen here trapped in a miniature castle. The story seems to position Bowser Jr. as a more direct antagonist, giving the sequel a fresh dynamic while keeping the larger Mario mythos intact.

The film’s tone leans toward grand-scale action, with elaborate planet-hopping sequences and visual nods to the 2007 Wii game that inspired the title. The trailer highlights sweeping space vistas and high-energy set pieces that seem designed to outdo the first film’s earthbound adventure. Princess Rosalina (voiced by Brie Larson) also makes her debut, appearing poised to take on a significant role in the interstellar conflict — possibly serving as the team’s key ally against Bowser Jr.’s new arsenal.

Noticeably absent is Yoshi, despite the previous film’s post-credits tease hinting at his arrival. That omission likely signals Illumination is saving the character for later marketing or a surprise reveal closer to release.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie appears to be aiming for a more ambitious scope while keeping the family-friendly humor and visual polish that made its predecessor a commercial hit. Whether Illumination can balance that scale of spectacle with the simple charm that defines Mario’s world remains to be seen, but the studio’s visual confidence is unmistakable in this first look.
