Peaky Blinders returns with a postwar generation of Shelbys

Peaky Blinders is making its way back to television, this time shifting focus to a new generation of the Shelby family. Steven Knight’s acclaimed crime drama, which originally chronicled the rise of gang leader Tommy Shelby in post-World War I Birmingham, will now explore the aftermath of World War II and the dramatic changes reshaping the city.

Cillian Murphy will once again return to his role as Tommy Shelby, a character that became one of the most recognizable figures in modern British television. Beyond acting, Murphy will also step into a production role as executive producer, though it remains unclear how central his character will be in a story now designed to pass the torch to the next wave of Shelbys.

When the sixth season aired in 2022, it was widely marketed as the conclusion to the saga. At the time, Knight hinted that the story would resurface in another form, and this continuation marks the fulfillment of that promise. The upcoming chapters will be set in 1953, a pivotal moment in British history when Birmingham was undergoing massive reconstruction after the devastation of the Blitz. According to the BBC, the new storyline will center on a ruthless struggle for control over the city’s rebuilding, blending political ambition, organized crime, and family conflict in a way that has defined the series since its debut in 2013.

Knight described the revival as two new seasons that remain firmly tied to Birmingham’s identity while expanding the scope of the Shelby legacy. The BBC, which will air the show in the UK before it lands on Netflix internationally, has framed the era as one of both risk and opportunity, with the Shelbys once again positioned at the center of violent power struggles.

Whether familiar characters beyond Tommy will reappear remains unconfirmed. The decision to push the timeline into the 1950s opens the door to a fresh generational conflict, potentially balancing audience nostalgia for the original series with the demands of new storytelling. For a show that built its reputation on dark family dynamics, class struggles, and shifting political landscapes, this next phase will test whether Peaky Blinders can sustain its cultural relevance in a different era.
