Prime Video is expanding its lineup of book adaptations with the debut of Scarpetta, a forensic thriller based on the long-running novels by Patricia Cornwell. The series is scheduled to premiere on March 11, 2026, offering the streaming service a different kind of lead series while audiences wait for new installments of Reacher.
Rather than focusing on the physical action that defines Reacher, the new series leans into investigative crime storytelling. At the center of the show is medical examiner Kay Scarpetta, played by Nicole Kidman. The character is known in Cornwell’s novels for solving complex cases through forensic analysis, often uncovering details that traditional investigations miss.
The project was developed for television by Liz Sarnoff, who previously worked on several character-driven dramas. The adaptation aims to translate the procedural and psychological elements of the novels into a serialized format built around criminal investigations and personal relationships.
Alongside Kidman, the series features Jamie Lee Curtis as Dorothy, Scarpetta’s sister. Curtis has long been connected to the adaptation, having previously pursued bringing the character to television through her production company. In the show, Dorothy plays a key role in the central storyline, adding a family dynamic to the investigation-driven narrative.
The main cast also includes Ariana DeBose, Bobby Cannavale, Simon Baker, Rosy McEwen, Jake Cannavale, and Savannah Lumar. Additional supporting roles include performers such as Sosie Bacon, Amanda Righetti, Janet Montgomery, Hunter Parrish, Tiya Sircar, Anna Diop, Graham Phillips, Georgia King, and Charlie B. Foster.
One unusual aspect of the project is that the series received a two-season order before its debut. Early multi-season commitments are relatively rare for new shows, especially adaptations that have not yet tested their audience response. The decision likely reflects the extensive source material available. Cornwell’s Scarpetta novels span several decades and more than twenty books, providing a large pool of storylines that could be adapted for television.
The original novels follow Kay Scarpetta as she works as a chief medical examiner, using forensic science to solve violent crimes. Over the years, the books have built a strong readership by combining procedural investigation with long-running character arcs and recurring antagonists. The television version appears to draw from that formula while reshaping certain elements to fit a modern streaming series format.
For Prime Video, the show represents another attempt to build recognizable franchises based on existing intellectual property. The platform has invested heavily in adaptations, including series based on novels, comic books, and film franchises. While Reacher has occupied the platform’s action-focused space, Scarpetta moves into darker crime drama territory, focusing on evidence analysis, criminal profiling, and psychological tension.
Whether the show can reach the same level of popularity as other Prime Video adaptations remains to be seen. Still, the combination of a well-known literary character and a cast led by established performers gives the project a strong starting point as it enters a crowded streaming market.
Scarpetta will begin streaming on Prime Video starting March 11.
