New Line Cinema has delayed the release of Mortal Kombat II, moving it from October 24, 2025, to May 15, 2026. The official announcement framed the shift as giving the tournament “a new time and place, worthy of its spectacle.”
The decision comes despite Warner Bros. and New Line having already rolled out promotional materials, including a trailer and images tied to the October date. Industry reports suggest the delay is a strategic move. October’s release slate is crowded, while a spring launch could give the sequel more breathing room at the box office. Strong early indicators may also have encouraged the shift: the red-band trailer amassed 106 million views in its first 24 hours, and initial screenings reportedly tested well with audiences.
The upcoming film follows 2021’s Mortal Kombat reboot, which introduced a fresh take on the long-running video game franchise. Mortal Kombat II brings in Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, a fan-favorite character who appears to be central to the sequel’s plot. The story will revolve around Cage joining the brutal tournament in a bid to protect Earthrealm, setting the stage for further exploration of the franchise’s lore.
While the video game series has a notoriously complex timeline, the film adaptations may provide a more accessible entry point for casual viewers. Writer Greg Russo has hinted that Mortal Kombat II could serve as the middle chapter of a trilogy, with a third film potentially concluding the saga.
