Avatar: Fire and Ash trailer reveals the rise of the ash people and new alliances

The latest trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash offers a deeper look into James Cameron’s third installment of the sprawling sci-fi franchise, hinting at a darker chapter for Pandora and its people.

The footage introduces Varang, played by Oona Chaplin, leader of the Ash People—a Na’Vi clan shaped by tragedy and defined by their rejection of Eywa. Her character appears central to the film’s conflict, as she aligns with Stephen Lang’s resurrected Colonel Quaritch. Together, they launch a campaign of destruction against Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their allies, escalating the war that reignited in The Way of Water.

One of the trailer’s most striking moments shows Spider (Jack Champion), the human child adopted by the Sullys, now able to breathe Pandora’s atmosphere without a mask and mentally connect with the planet’s wildlife. That transformation suggests he may be positioned as a key bridge between humans and Na’Vi—or a weapon in the struggle, depending on where his loyalties fall.

Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully also makes a dramatic return to his toruk, the massive red flying beast that cemented his place as a leader back in the original Avatar. The imagery teases a callback to the first film while underscoring how high the stakes have risen for the Sully family.

Cameron has promised that Fire and Ash will expand the mythology of Pandora with new cultures, creatures, and environments, while diving further into character-driven storytelling. The Ash People embody that expansion, providing a foil to the Na’Vi clans audiences have met so far and exploring what happens when a community turns away from the spiritual lifeblood of their world.

As a follow-up to The Way of Water, which pushed the boundaries of visual effects and worldbuilding, this third entry looks set to blend technical spectacle with a narrative that sharpens the conflict between humanity and Pandora’s inhabitants. The trailer positions Fire and Ash not just as a continuation, but as a pivot toward even greater emotional and cultural stakes in Cameron’s long-planned saga.
