Marvel Studios has confirmed that a familiar Captain America costume will make an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, marking the return of Steve Rogers’ Avengers: Endgame-era suit. The confirmation comes alongside news that Chris Evans will reprise his role as Steve Rogers, placing two versions of Captain America on screen at the same time as the franchise continues to expand its multigenerational approach to legacy characters.
Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Steve Rogers previously passed the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie. Since then, Wilson has operated as the active Captain America, wearing suits that differ notably in design, materials, and function from Rogers’ earlier costumes. Avengers: Doomsday appears to acknowledge this transition while still revisiting visual elements associated with the MCU’s earlier phases.

The first trailer for the film does not function as a traditional ensemble teaser. Instead, it centers almost entirely on Steve Rogers, depicting him in a quieter stage of life. The footage suggests that Steve has settled into domestic life following the events of Avengers: Endgame, with the reveal that he and Peggy Carter have a son. While Peggy herself is not shown, the implication of a family life frames Steve’s relationship to heroism as something tied to the past rather than an ongoing obligation.
In the trailer, Steve is shown handling his Avengers: Endgame Captain America suit, folding it carefully before placing it into storage. The moment is brief but deliberate, drawing attention to the costume’s design, which incorporated scaled textures inspired by classic Marvel Comics artwork. That suit was widely seen as a visual midpoint between comic accuracy and grounded MCU aesthetics, and its reappearance appears intended as a narrative reference point rather than a straightforward return to action.
At this stage, it remains unclear whether Steve Rogers will actually wear the suit again in Avengers: Doomsday. The scene can be read as symbolic, reinforcing the idea that Steve has chosen to step away from frontline heroics. At the same time, the broader story context suggests that he will still be involved in the conflict, particularly with the threat posed by Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. How Steve participates may differ significantly from his past role, potentially separating his presence from the Captain America identity now carried by Sam Wilson.
This approach allows Marvel Studios to balance continuity and progression. Sam Wilson remains firmly established as the current Captain America, while Steve Rogers’ legacy is acknowledged without fully reversing his character arc. The inclusion of the Avengers: Endgame suit, then, appears less about nostalgia for its own sake and more about reinforcing where Steve has been—and why he no longer occupies the same place in the MCU’s present.
