Apple TV deepens Monsterverse timeline with another prequel series

Apple TV is continuing to expand its Monsterverse slate with a newly ordered prequel series that further builds on the world introduced in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The untitled project marks the second Monsterverse prequel developed specifically for the streaming platform and reinforces Apple TV’s ongoing partnership with Legendary Television.

The new series will center on a younger version of Colonel Lee Shaw, portrayed by Wyatt Russell. In Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Russell plays Shaw in earlier timeline segments, while his father, Kurt Russell, appears as the older incarnation of the character. This upcoming prequel will move the story forward from those flashbacks, placing Shaw in 1984 during the latter stages of the Cold War.

According to early story details, the series will follow Shaw as an American operative attempting to prevent Soviet forces from unleashing a Titan whose release could devastate the United States and dramatically alter global power dynamics. By situating the narrative in the mid-1980s, the show avoids overlapping too closely with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters while still deepening the franchise’s historical foundation. The time period also allows the series to explore Monarch’s evolving role, early Titan encounters, and geopolitical tensions that shaped the organization’s mission.

Joby Harold has been named showrunner for the project. Harold previously served as an executive producer on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and has experience working on large-scale franchise storytelling across film and television. The series will be produced through his company, Safehouse Pictures, under an expanded deal with Legendary aimed at developing additional Monsterverse content for Apple TV.

From a franchise perspective, the prequel appears designed to fill narrative gaps rather than introduce a completely separate storyline. By focusing on Lee Shaw, the show can provide continuity between different eras of the Monsterverse and further connect Wyatt Russell’s portrayal with Kurt Russell’s older version. There is also potential for other established characters from Monarch: Legacy of Monsters to appear, though no additional casting has been confirmed.

The announcement comes ahead of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, which is scheduled to premiere on February 27. The first season ended with Shaw’s fate left uncertain, though it has since been confirmed that Kurt Russell will return in the upcoming season. The finale also expanded the series’ scope with a cameo from Kong, signaling a larger Titan presence moving forward.

Apple TV’s Monsterverse expansion runs parallel to Legendary’s theatrical plans. On the film side, the franchise is set to continue with Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, scheduled for release on March 26, 2027. Together, the streaming and theatrical projects suggest a long-term strategy focused on sustained world-building rather than standalone entries.

Rather than relying solely on spectacle, the new prequel appears positioned to explore the political, historical, and organizational roots of the Monsterverse, using familiar characters to anchor a broader narrative that spans decades.
