A new Breaking Bad project is coming, but it’s not what fans expect

A new addition to the Breaking Bad universe has been confirmed, though it takes a different form from what some fans might expect. Rather than another television series or film, the next project connected to the long-running franchise will be a book. Titled Do What You’re Gonna Do: The Definitive Oral History of Breaking Bad, the release is scheduled for November 3 and has been announced by actor Dean Norris, who portrayed DEA agent Hank Schrader in the original series.

Breaking Bad first aired in 2008 and concluded in 2013 after five seasons. Created by Vince Gilligan, the show followed the transformation of a high school chemistry teacher into a methamphetamine producer, with performances from Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul earning multiple awards. Over time, the series built a reputation for tight storytelling and character development, which helped it maintain strong critical and audience reception. Its continued availability on streaming platforms has also contributed to its long-term visibility.

The upcoming oral history book aims to compile behind-the-scenes accounts and interviews with cast and crew, offering additional context on how the series was developed and produced. According to Norris, the material includes previously unreleased stories from those involved in the show’s creation. While books of this kind are not unusual for popular television properties, their success often depends on how much new insight they can provide beyond widely known production details.

This release follows earlier expansions of the Breaking Bad narrative. Better Call Saul, centered on Bob Odenkirk’s character, ran for several seasons and was widely regarded as a strong companion piece rather than a simple extension. El Camino, a 2019 film that revisited Jesse Pinkman’s story, received a more mixed response, with some viewers noting that it lacked the narrative weight of the original series.

The decision to revisit the franchise through a retrospective book rather than new scripted content suggests a more measured approach to keeping the property active. While Breaking Bad remains commercially valuable for distributors like AMC and Netflix, there is currently no indication that Vince Gilligan plans to return to this world in the near future. He is reportedly focused on other projects, including ongoing work in science fiction television.

For audiences, the oral history may serve as a way to revisit the series from a production standpoint rather than through new storytelling. Whether it resonates will likely depend on the depth of its material and the level of access it provides to the people behind one of television’s most discussed dramas.
