YouTube is launching a dedicated site and app for gaming in an attempt to take on Twitch. The search giant said the service is launching this summer.
“On YouTube, gaming has spawned entirely new genres of videos, from let’s plays, walkthroughs, and speedruns to cooking and music videos. Now, it’s our turn to return the favour with something built just for gamers” – Alan Joyce, YouTube Gaming Product Manager
YouTube Gaming will consist of 25,000 individual game portals which brings all the activity from each title on a single page.
The YouTube Gaming app and website will let users subscribe to channels and be notified on livestreams, and make recommendations based on a user’s subscribed channels.
On the creators’ side, YouTube said that livestreamers can now use a single link to share their feed, eliminating the need to create a new link every time they go live.
YouTube Gaming’s launch will initially just be in the US and UK.
