YouTube has confirmed its plan to launch a dedicated app for kids. “YouTube Kids”, will offer TV content and YouTube channels aimed specifically at children like “Thomas the Tank Engine” and “Sesame Street”, as well as videos from other partners like DreamWorks and National Geographic.
YouTube Kids will have a safe search feature and a timer allowing parents to set a timer on how much a child can watch.
Parents were constantly asking us, can you make YouTube a better place for our kids, says Shimrit Ben-Yair, the project’s group product manager, noting that family-friendly fare is a booming business on YouTube. “(Year over year) we’ve seen 50% growth in viewing time on YouTube, but for our family entertainment channels, it’s more like 200%.
The stand-alone app will run on smartphones and tablets for Android only as a start and will launch in the US.
