Starting Wednesday, users can sign up for Facebook Messenger mobile app with their mobile phone number, said Facebook in a blog post.
The move comes after research showed that some users preferred to use Messenger, but didn’t want to be on Facebook, Messenger head David Marcus said to the WSJ.
Users will be able to select the “Not on Facebook?” option, and enter their phone number and name to activate.
All of us have one or two friends who are not on Facebook and clearly they’re the minority at this point,” Marcus said. But, he added, messaging is such a primary use case we didn’t want to make it a prerequisite to have a Facebook account.
The roll out is limited at this point and is starting with the United States, Canada, Peru, and Venezuela.
