Rumour has it that Twitter is considering dropping the 140 character limit that the service is so infamously known for. If it is true, then it’ll be a jarring move, one that would definitely re-position Twitter as a medium. Given its recent strategic change, the company might be doing this to pave way to its direction as a real time news delivery platform.
It’s still unclear how this will be done, but in an effort to drop further character counts, the company might be excluding links and handle names from the tweet limit.
I am not sure how this will benefit the company, though. The character limit has been quite an obstacle but there are numerous workarounds, including creative and concise vocabulary as well as embedded retweets. Perhaps excluding elements from the character count would be sufficient. The appeal for longer tweets is there, but perhaps no limitations on character count might alienate a massive user-base as well as make timeline management confusing.
We’ll have to wait and see if this ever sees the light of day, and to what capacity.
