WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new encryption protocol to its messaging service.
The company said it is implementing strong end-to-end encryption on all WhatsApp text messages in collaboration with Open Whisper Systems in a move aimed at protecting users’ conversations from unwanted surveillance.
The new encryption was added by default in the last update for Android smartphones and said to be heading to other platforms soon.
We have a ways to go until all mobile platforms are fully supported, but we are moving quickly towards a world where all WhatsApp users will get end-to-end encryption by default, a blog post on Whisper Systems stated.
WhatsApp is estimated to have around 600 million monthly active users sending billions of messages every day. The company described the roll out as ” the largest deployment of end-to-end encryption ever.”
