Wayl, the first Arab superhero comic book in MENA

Superheroes and comic books are the bread and butter for most people. When it comes to movies, the next few years are action packed with the likes of Thor: Ragnarok, Captain America: Civil War, Batman vs Superman, the Justice League and so forth. For television we have Agents of SHIELD, Daredevil and the various cartoons we grew up watching. But of course, the coup de grâce is of course comic books. Every geek out there has a favourite comic book series, weather it’s DC or Marvel. And now the MENA region will have its own superhero.

Debuting at the MIddle East Film and Comic Con in Dubai next month, Wayl revolves around the story of Sufyan El-Taher, who recently returned to Jordan with his wife Sophia to take over his family’s business empire after his father’s death as his sole living survivor. With tensions rising in the region and lawlessness prevalent, Sufyan must face a city in ruins with rampant crime and corruption plaguing it. But dangers on the streets are just one of his many problems – much like Bruce Wayne he is challenged by an interim CEO who doesn’t want to part with the power he has cultivated in Sufyan’s absence.. The result is a conflict that leads directly to the creation of a super-being: the Arab World’s first real superhero…

And that’s pretty much all we know about the plot.

Wayl came to inception in the mind of creator Zaid Adham back in 2011 when he realised that most comic books in the MIddle East are imported from abroad; he set out to create a comic that would be exported, reversing the roles. Inspired by both personal experiences and his background as a filmmaker, Adham set out to create Wayl, setting the story in a real city, choosing his birth town of Amman and setting the story against a backdrop of fictional events and urban mythology. One urban legend is represented in the comics as a villain: Abu Shakoosh. Long a popular subject of Ammanite urban legends, Abu Shakoosh’s history as an uncaught serial killer will be sure to intrigue readers and peak interest in the comic.

The first issue of Wayl’s superhero story is finally set to launch both in digital and in print form on April 7 at the 2016 MEFCC in Dubai.
