EA has generally drawn the ire of many gamers every E3, this year seemed no different. I have to admit being a Star Wars fan, I’m very excited for Star Wars Battlefront but it all seemed lost as EA tried as hard to push sports, mobile gaming and Pre Alpha game previews. In between all of the noise of sequels, reboots and early access schemes came a little gem that won my heart.
In what has been one of the most honest presentations in E3, Swedish based indie game studio, Coldwood have announced a new ip with EA, eloquently titled Unravel. Now I say this because Martin Sahlin from Coldwood decided to talk about his game by first telling us the premise of the story and what it is based on before showing anything else and while clearly nervous, he won the hearts of the audience for his sheer feelings on why he made Unravel and it’s moments like these that make E3 shine.
“You play a character made of “unravelling yarn which represents love. You are the red thread that runs through someone’s life and you get to put their lives back together” Martin Sahlin, Coldwood
Unravel is an adorable puzzle platformer that appears it will pull on your heart strings. Speaking of strings, the main character, Yarny, is an anthromorphic of yarn on on a scandinavian journey. You, as yarny, will unravel yourself to solve environmental puzzles with ranging difficulty as you connect various threads of emotion in a largely metaphorical way and doing all of this makes it look absolutely adorable.
You’ll get vibes from Playstation’s sackboy meets Ori and the Blind Forest. Majority of this gameplay is physics based which knots everything together in a beautiful way that ties all the loose ends between seamless gameplay and storytelling.
No release date on when we will see Unravel but it will be available as a digital download to PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One. It sure is nice to see EA invest in these kind of titles and hopefully will do a lot more to tie in other emotional story driven games.
