Uber is no stranger to questionable privacy policies, having to deal with enough PR scandals that can put any business out of order. The policies are about to get even creepier – but thankfully, with the new privacy team on board, these policies are opt-in.
For starters, the Uber app will be able to fetch location data in the background while the app is closed. In their blog post, Uber has outlined that this will enable users to “get on their way more quickly”. At the moment, the app takes a few seconds to fetch your location; with the new update, it will allow you to instantly order a cab since your location has been pre-fetched.
Additionally, Uber will be able to access your contacts to send promotions and special offers to your friends and family.
What is understood at the moment is that these are opt-in options, but either way, keep an eye out for them in the settings in the next update and switch them on/off at will.
