Uber may have launched in Dubai back in 2013 but its most popular service has been missing from the app these past few years. UberX is a service option which allows anyone to drive for Uber using their own car, subject to a background check and car requirements. Until today, the cheapest option available was Uber Select, which is operated through licenced partners.
“UberX hits the roads today, April 17th, as a pilot project in partnership with the RTA, and part of our commitment to introduce an affordable solution to help our riders get around. During the pilot, only a select number of riders will have access to request UberX.”

Now with UberX, customers can be expected to pay more affordable prices when travelling, though there will naturally be a slight decline in the comfort and quality. Riders can expect to pay a flat AED 5 base rate, AED 1.37 per Km travelled and AED 0.40 per minute during the ride.
UberX will roll out in multiple phases, with the first phase introducing the service via its existing Uber partner drivers. As a result, even though you’ll be ordering an UberX, you’ll still be picked up in the likes of a Toyota Previa, Toyota Prado or even a Lexus sedan. Once the initial roll out pans out well, Uber will expand the program to a more affordable selection of vehicles.
“We thrive on finding ways to constantly improve and refine our technology to provide safe, reliable, and affordable rides and we’re excited to continue to work closely with the RTA in line with their innovative vision for transportation in Dubai.”
Meanwhile, the company’s UberEats app is also looking to enter the Indian market by this Summer.
