Twitter has always struggled to define itself as a platform. As a result, the microblogging site has failed to attract as many users as its competitors, despite testing out new features. One such feature is “Moments”, a curated slideshow of tweets. Alas, the feature didn’t bolster Twitter’s figures, which only grew by 3%, while revenue growth fell to 20%. In a bid to still stay relevant, the company announced that in the coming months’ everyone will be able to create Moments.
“Today, we’re excited to announce that a broader group of creators will be making Moments, including influencers, partners, brands… and in the coming months, everyone.”
But for now, the list of curators is only being expanded to influencers, partners and brands. On the list of influencers and brands, for now, are civil rights activist DeRay and Allure magazine. For now, creators will get a tab on their Twitter profile on the web that lists the Moments they’ve made. The best Moments are eligible to appear in the Moments tabs under its various categories.
Much like how Instagram is letting its users censor their own posts, Twitter is aiming to harness the power of the masses in an effort to score more impressions. However, unlike YouTube, while Twitter is turning Moments into an open platform, it won’t be sharing a cut of the revenue with content creators.
