The Next OnePlus Smartphone is Invite-Free!

OnePlus’s next smartphone is coming out later this month, but that isn’t the piece of news revolving around the new OnePlus 3 that should excite you. The smartphone company’s new flagship device will also be Invite-Free! When the first OnePlus One came out a few years ago, it reinvented the way of marketing and selling a phone. Why? Because getting it depended on a frustrating invitation-based system.

As a result of the invitation-based system, not many people heard of the OnePlus One and its follow up, the OnePlus 2. It did pay off: co-founder Carl Pei envisaged selling 500,000 units and in the end shipped nearly 1 million.

“When we started this company, we had no idea how many people would want to buy our products. We didn’t want to risk a situation where people would come to our website and find out we had no stock, and no ETA on when we would get it. For us it’s more important to grow sustainably rather than fast, so we’d rather err on the side of caution.”

– Co-founder Carl Pei.

Now with the invitation-based system abolished, chances are those sale figures will sky rocket. The OnePlus 3’s price will be comparable to the higher end OnePlus Two and OnePlus One.
