Sony’s hacking fiasco over its controversial movie “The Interview” has been making a lot of noise around the world, and after a lot of debate, the company has decided to release the movie online through multiple channels like YouTube and Google Play but limiting it to the US only.
Last Wednesday Sony began contacting a number of companies, including Google, to ask if we’d be able to make their movie, “The Interview,” available online. We’d had a similar thought and were eager to help—though given everything that’s happened, the security implications were very much at the front of our minds, Google’s Chief Legal Officer David Drummond said.
Of course this limitation didn’t stop the torrent community from taking action and releasing the movie across the globe.
Just hours after its release the movie appeared on torrent websites like the Pirate Bay and was downloaded more than 250,000 times within a few hours. The number of estimated downloads has now exceeded 750,000 after 20 hours of release and is expected to hit the 1M mark in the next few hours.
