“Text walking lanes” for smartphone addicts launched in Belgium

Walking the streets and texting has become a normal trend in the past few years, but you’d probably didn’t notice it, you know, since you’re doing it too.

Walking and texting is a big distraction and can cause collision with other “normal” human beings or objects. So the city of Antwerp in Belgium has decided to provide the sidewalks of the busiest shopping streets with a dedicated temporary “text walking lanes”.

The initiative  is the idea of Mlab, a smartphone company based in the city.

This is not the first city to introduce such lanes, Washington, DC, and Chongqing in China have already provided text and walk paths.
You probably walk through the streets while texting or sending Whatsapp messages to your friends and don’t really pay attention to your surroundings – only to whatever is happening on your screen, a spokesman for Mlab, said to Yahoo News. This causes collisions with poles or other pedestrians. You could, unknowingly, even be endangering your own life while you ‘textwalk’ when you cross the street without looking up.
