Solar energy is a subject Elon Musk has always been keen about. After all, the amount of fossil fuels we can exploit is but a finite amount and as a result we see governments around the world diversifying their energy portfolios. Tesla is one company that is synonymous with renewable energy thanks to the efforts of Musk. Yesterday, at a press event in Universal Studios, California, Tesla unveiled its own line of solar panels with integrated batteries.
However, solar panels, while being a great source of renewable energy, have always been an eyesore. The line of solar panels is actually made of textured glass tile with integrated solar cells. As a result, you can cover your roof with them and it would look as good or better than conventional roofs, according to Musk. According to Musk, the tiles are hydrographically printed, which will actually may each tile unique, meaning you won’t have two sets of roofs that are the same.
Another issue with solar panels that Tesla have covered with the Powerwall 2 is durability. Each of the glass tiles is more durable than their conventional roof shingle counterparts, meaning you won’t have to replace the tiles on the roof every few years. Furthermore, you can also opt for different designs: Textured Glass Tile, Slate Glass Tile, Tuscan Glass Tile, and Smooth Glass Tile.
But ultimately, the biggest problem with solar panels are the fact that energy storage solutions have never been up to mark with them. However, the solar tiles here that have integrated batteries actually have Powerwall 2 batteries which can store 14 kWh of energy, with a 5 kW continuous power draw, and 7 kW peak. Furthermore, the battery is warranted for unlimited power cycles for up to 10 years and it can be placed nearly anywhere in or outside your house, letting you soak up that energy during sunny hours. Said energy will then be drawn from the Powerwall 2 during the time the solar panels don’t receive enough light.
The solar tiles are the product of a collaboration between Tesla and SolarCity, a company that Tesla has been planning to acquire for quite some time now.
