If you’re a prolific Snapchat user, your snaps may actually benefit mankind today. In light of World AIDS Day, Snapchat have added 3 new, special filters in an international effort to have people show their support for people with HIV and to raise money for organisations trying to eradicate AIDS.
It was Bono’s AIDS-fighting organisation RED that approached Snapchat with the pleasant twist that everytime someone sends a snap with a RED filter, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation will donate $3 to the organization’s fight against AIDS. This isn’t the first time RED has partnered with a technology company in the fight against AIDS; last year they partnered with Apple’s App Store, and in 2013 they partnered with Vine, the popular video sharing app owned by Twitter. However this marks the first major philanthropic effort made by Snapchat.
The new filters went live in each region as the clock his 12 am Tuesday and will be available for 24 hours. The Gates Foundation will donate up to $3 million, which means that at least one million people will need to use the filters in order to max out the donation. This shouldn’t be tough since according to statistics, when Snapchat sells filters to advertisers, it generally guarantees tens of millions of views for any given filter, so it’s probable the RED campaign will max out on Tuesday itself.
Here’s a look at what filters Snapchat users will be able to use today:
