Samsung revealed the new Galaxy Tab S2, which comes in 8-inch and 9.7-inch models. We have reviewed the previous model so we are rather excited about this, even though there are some major differences to the design this year.
First off, Samsung has reduced the size of bigger and smaller versions, from 8.4″ to 8″ and from 10.5″ to 9.7″ – the more drastic change, however, lies in the aspect ratio, where Samsung dropped 16:9 widescreen in favour for the 4:3 iPad-like format.
According to Samsung, this format is optimal in recreating the “traditional media” viewing experiences, indicating that the target use of the Tab S2 is for digital media consumption. The new Super AMOLED screen now has “reading mode” that adjusts the brightness to enable longer reading sessions. The new Tab S2 is also lighter and thinner, measuring 5.6mm and weighing 385g for the 9.7″ unit, and 254g for the 8″.
The devices are powered by an octa-core CPU clocked at 1.9Ghz/1.3Ghz, 3GB of RAM, 32-64GB memory with MicroSD, and batteries with 5870mAh (9.7″) and 4000mAh (8″) capacities. Android L will power both units.
