After numerous delays, Google has confirmed that Project Ara lives on and that its modular smartphone is set for a 2017 commercial release. The new developer kit is also set to be released in 2016.
It’ll be thin, it’ll be light, it’ll be beautiful, said Blaise Bertrand, Project Ara’s head of creative.
Google also said that it had to made some amendments to its modular structure. The display, processor, RAM, and storage are now locked into the frame, which means there won’t be any upgrade options. The company teamed up with several companies for its modules, including Micron, Panasonic, Toshiba, Sony and iHealth.
There is no official word yet on how much it will cost or when in 2017 t’ll be released. You can check out the new Ara website and sign up for updates here.
