Photos and links will no longer count in Twitter’s 140-character limit

Twitter’s 140-character limit has been the source of much drama over the past year, mostly from rumours that the limit would be raised to a ceiling of 10,000 characters, as it has been done for Twitter’s Direct Messages. Thankfully the rumours proved to be false, prompting people to think of even more innovative ways to condense and summarise information they wished to share with the wider world. In that regard, the introduction of GIFs really helped.

And now the Social Media platform that’s still struggling to define itself is going to extend its character limit, without actually doing so. Instead, links and photos will no longer count as part of a tweet and won’t count against the character limit. Previously links, even shortened ones, took up 24 characters, cutting down the amount of information a user could supply along with a link. The same is true for photos and GIFs.

According to Bloomberg, a person familiar with the matter stated that the change can happen within two weeks. Back in January Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter, stated that the company was looking for new and innovative ways to display text on Twitter and while this isn’t a groundbreaking method of going about it, it’s a start. A few months ago, the platform changed the way Tweets were displayed, using a new algorithm instead of the chronological format.
