Update: The OnePlus Three will launch on June 14th
In an exclusive interview to CNET, Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus has stated that the OnePlus 3 is expected to launch “at the end of the second quarter” of 2016. While no specific details have been revealed about the device, Pei did remark hope that users would revel in the new model design as they once did with the OnePlus One. The new design marks a departure from the OnePlus Two.
The Chinese manufacturer made its debut into the smartphone market with the OnePlus One, a device that managed to compete with other high end devices such as the LG G3 and Samsung Galaxy S5, mostly due to its high-end specs and affordable price. Critics also hailed its design, especially the matte plastic shell, that helped give it its own little niche in the market.
“The US will be very important for us this year”
Pei has acknowledged that the current market for smartphones is a tough one, and it’s easy to understand why; new smartphones come out every month or so, but he says he understands that many young people are also looking for new brands that offer quality at a good price. Earlier this year, OnePlus began to have presence in personnel in the US and last in the UK.
According to Pei, the OnePlus 3 will arrive in the US and other markets as an unlocked phone and will be sold directly by the company, rather than through telecommunication providers as has been the norm for most smartphones. He says the company expects to offer a “better buying process,” although he did not reveal if that would mean abandoning its system of selling by invitation only.
The company also said it will continue to offer free shipping on its devices, and will accept payments with credit card, rather than just offering PayPal payments as it has so far.
