Wearable fitness technology is all the rage these days, so it comes as a surprise that Nike will be discontinuing FuelBand and focus on software instead, according to a report by CNET. Employees currently working on the FuelBand division have been let go and the upcoming, slimmer version of the device scheduled to be released later in the year has been cancelled as well.
The move to focus on software only will allow it to avoid the hardware competition – a bandwagon everyone seems to be jumping on – and focus instead on the technologies and opening up the APIs. Considering that Apple’s Tim Cook is on Nike’s board, it is likely that we see some form of partnership in the long run.
