Modular smartphones are on the rise; last year we saw the Moto Z sweep the world with its modular capabilities and just a few days ago Andy Rubin unveiled the Essential Phone, another smartphone with modular capabilities. Now, Motorola has unveiled the Moto Z2 Play, the successor to the Moto Z.
The Moto Z2 Play will be available in July once again as a Verizon carrier exclusive in the U.S. It will also be sold unlocked through Motorola.com later this summer for $499. It measures across at 156.2 x 76.2 mm and just 5.99 mm in thickness. Those dimensions, along with a weight of just 145 g means you won’t even be able to notice its presence in your pocket.
Much like the original Moto Z Play, the Moto Z2 Play is a mid-range smartphone, although it is still an upgrade to its predecessor.
The battery is about 15 percent smaller — 3,000mAh vs. 3,510mAh — although Motorola says that you can still get up to 30 hours of battery life before needing to find a charging port. However, the processor, RAM and camera are all an upgrade. The new camera has a 12MP sensor with Dual Autofocus abilities, 1.4-micron pixels, a f/1.7 aperture lens, dual pixel focusing, and an improved laser focus system for low-light.
Powering the Moto Z2 Play is a Snapdragon 626 processor which is helped by 4GB of RAM. Storage-wise, the Moto Z2 Play comes with 64GB of storage. When it comes to software, the modular smartphone runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat. A new fingerprint scanner and voice controls will allow consumers to get information without having to unlock or touch their devices.
When it comes to modular devices including a $79.99 JBL SoundBoost 2, a $79.99 Moto TurboPower Pack charger, a $39.99 Wireless Charging Style Shell and, later this summer, a very exciting $79.99 GamePad, which adds physical gaming controls to any Moto Z device.
