Motorola Aims To Release Four Moto Z Mods Per Quarter Next Year

Lenovo Moto z Moto mods

The state of the modular smartphone is in flux. First, we have the LG G5, which was modular in an all but execution. Then you had the Google’s Project Ara which amazed people who saw the concept video but ultimately bit the dust and was shelved. Ultimately, the only modular smartphone 2016 had to offer was the Moto Z with its snap-on mods.

However, there was a slight problem, something that plagued the LG G5 as well, there weren’t that many modular add-ons. Sure, the Moto Mods available numbered more than those available for the G5, but four mods (not including the simple back cover) weren’t much. Thankfully, it looks like Motorola will be upping the ante in the new year.

“Without having to wait for the next-gen phone that can bring the next technology or capability, we can get to that quicker through the mod.”

– John Touvannas, senior director of product management.

The company plans on releasing Mods more quickly than it did in 2016, aiming for four new ones per quarter. That could total up to sixteen Mods, which may seem far reaching, though we have seen some interesting concepts. For instance, Motorola showcased a secondary display and more powerful cameras. An interesting take is the possible inclusion of a Mod that may actually upgrade the specifications on the Moto Z but adding 5G radio for next-gen data speeds.

According to Stephen McDonnell, the director of the Moto Mods ecosystem, they have received numerous submissions, through hackathons, for potential mods. 380 submissions in fact. Concepts such as alarm clocks, e-ink screens, game controllers, keyboards, walkie-talkies, and a kinetic charger are all possible.
