Microsoft’s new products: Here’s what you need to know

Microsoft announced a bundle of new products in a massive event in NYC. From new a new Surface range to smartphones, a wearable, and its first ever laptop.

Surface Book

Probably the highlight and surprise of the event. The Surface Book, Microsoft’s first ever laptop comes with a small twist, the screen detaches to be used as a stand-alone tablet. The Surface Book has a 13.5-inch display, a glass trackpad and is housed in a magnesium body. Internally, the Surface Pro is powered by an Intel Core processor, an Nvidia GPU with GDDR5 memory and a battery capable to last 12 hours. Microsoft claims its the fastest laptop of its size.

The Surface Book starts at $1,499 and is available to pre-order on October 7.

Surface Pro 4 

Microsoft also revealed the new Surface Pro 4. The new Surface Pro 4 said to have gotten a 30 percent performance bump over its predecessor and has 16 GB of RAM, and up to 1 TB of storage. On the display side, the Surface Pro 4 now has a 12.3 screen at 267 PPI and a new thinner and lighter Type Cover. The Surface Pen received an upgrade as well and now holds an eraser and a button to launch Cortana.

The Surface Pro 4 is available for preorder and will go on sale on Oct. 26 for the retail price of $899 

Lumia 950 And Lumia 950 XL

Microsoft’s Lumia 950, the 5.2-inch device is equipped with an hexacore processor while the 950 XL comes with a 5.7-inch display and will be powered by an Octacore processor. The new devices contain liquid cooling technology.

A 20-megapixel cameras with natural flash which can shoot 4K video is available on both models. Other features include a 32GB of internal storage capacity, a microSD card slot, a USB Type-C connector and a 3340 mAh battery.

The Lumia 950 And Lumia 950 XL will ship in November and will retail at $549, and $649 respectively.

Microsoft Band 2

Microsoft’s fitness tracker got an upgrade as well,  the Microsoft Band now features an improved design, a barometer to track elevation and VO2 (maximum volume of oxygen) and track activity, calories, and sleep.

The Microsoft Band 2 is compatible with Windows Phones, iOS and Android, and will retail for $249 on Oct. 30.

HoloLens

Microsoft showed some live games for HoloLens, its augmented reality project. The games included a battle game that projects robots on your walls.

The Hololens developer kit will cost $3,000 and will be available sometime during the first quarter of 2016.
