It seems that our smartphones are, in fact, not incredibly intelligent when it comes to interacting with them. We still rely on tapping specific touch points to activate functions. Taking a photo? Tap on the screen to bring up the settings (not on iOS, obviously). Do you want to pause a YouTube video? Tap the screen, and then tap the pause icon.
It doesn’t need to be this way, though, as Microsoft demonstrates in the video.
This sorcery is brought to you by Microsoft Research, but there is no indication on the direction the company will be taking this technology. Will it license other vendors to use it? Will it incorporate it into the Surface Phone? Will it incorporate it into tablets as well?
