Microsoft is using a “freemium” model for Office for iPad. Word, Excel and Powerpoint for iPad are available from the iTunes App Store and are free to download, but they’ll only let you access and read existing Office documents. To create new files and edit them, you’ll need an Office 365 subscription which is priced at $9.99 per month for Office 365 Home Premium and $6.99 per month for personal plan.
With that subscription, you’ll be able to come close to the capabilities of the full version, all files will be stored online.
