LG has teamed up with Google to bring virtual reality to the market and compete with Samsung’s Gear VR.
The company said it’ll soon launch the VR for G3, a new headset that will initially be free for new buyers of LG’s G3 smartphone.
The new headset, inspired from Google’s Cardboard wont have any actual screen or processor, and will instead have its lenses use the G3’s quad HD display as the screen. Users will be able to download apps and play games available for virtual reality on the Play Store.
The VR for G3 is made out of plastic and has a cut out for the G3’s camera and its sleep/wake/power switches placed in the back.
This is just the beginning of the virtual reality movement, which until recently was expensive and inaccessible to everyday consumers, Chris Yie, an LG marketing executive, said in a statement.
